"La Huerta" means Garden
Just as I am a cultivator of young minds I also like to get my hands dirty and grow veggies. My experience stems from time spent in Ecuador with the humble and abundantly generous people of rural villages, learning from them what it means to farm the land.
Here at Austin High we have a small plot of land that we use to teach the students from different classes about what it means to garden. We also educate in the way of allowing students to see with their own eyes what a plant looks like outside of the grocery store setting. Many students have never seen a radish with its green leaves, many others are unfamiliar with what a lettuce plant looks like while still in the ground.
It is very rewarding to see the look of surprise and pleasure when a student comes to the realization that these vegetables that end up on our dinner plates, do not just come from the salad bar at the store but instead from the ground that we walk on.
